The Oort cloud as a remnant of the protosolar nebula

چکیده

If comets are assumed to have been created in the cool, dense regions of interstellar clouds, then these macroscopic bodies have to take part in the collapse of a protostar cloud as bodies following the laws of mechanics, in contrast to the gas and microscopic dust, which follow the laws of hydrodynamics. Here we present evidence concerning the solar system comets: if the velocity distribution of comets before the collapse of protosolar cloud was similar to what it is now in the outer Oort cloud then the comets would have remained at large distances from the centre of the cloud. Hence, the comets in the solar Oort cloud may represent a remnant of the nebular stage of the solar system.

Isotopic abundances of carbon and nitrogen in Jupiter-family and Oort Cloud comets

The 12C14N/12C15N and 12C14N/13C14N isotopic ratios are determined for the first time in a Jupiter-family comet, 88P/1981 Q1 Howell, and in the chemically peculiar Oort Cloud comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR). By comparing these measurements to previous ones derived for six other Oort Cloud comets (including one of Halley-type), we find that both the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios are constant with...

Accretion of Jupiter’s Atmosphere from a Supernova-Contaminated Molecular Cloud Submitted to Icarus 14-Oct-2008 Revised 24-Nov-2009 Accepted 9-Feb-2010

If Jupiter and the Sun both formed directly from the same well-mixed protosolar nebula, then their atmospheric compositions should be similar. However, direct sampling of Jupiter’s troposphere indicates that it is enriched in elements such as C, N, S, Ar, Kr, and Xe by 2–6× relative to the Sun (Wong et al. 2008). Most existing models to explain this enrichment require an extremely cold protosol...

The origin of the Solar System in the field of a standing sound wave

According to the planetary origin conceptual model proposed in this paper, the protosun centre of the pre-solar nebula exploded, resulting in a shock wave that passed through it and then returned to the centre, generating a new explosion and shock wave. Recurrent explosions in the nebula resulted in a spherical standing sound wave, whose antinodes concentrated dust into rotating rings that tran...

New Insights on Saturn’s Formation from Its Nitrogen Isotopic Composition

The recent derivation of a lower limit for the 14N/15N ratio in Saturn’s ammonia, which is found to be consistent with the Jovian value, prompted us to revise models of Saturn’s formation using as constraints the supersolar abundances of heavy elements measured in its atmosphere. Here we find that it is possible to account for both Saturn’s chemical and isotopic compositions if one assumes the ...

Orbital Evolution of Planets Embedded in a Planetesimal Disk

The existence of the Oort Comet Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and plausible inefficiencies in planetary core formation, all suggest that there was once a residual planetesimal disk of mass ∼ 10–100 M⊕ in the vicinity of the giant planets following their formation. Since removal of this disk requires an exchange of orbital energy and angular momentum with the planets, significant planetary migration c...
